Besides the fact that it is getting close to Halloween, The weather change and the wonderful time when you can take the AC units out of the windows, open them up and let the cool crisp fresh air in. There are many homeless and thoughts who maybe facing evictions for various reasons. This year there are many challenges with the Covid 19 pandemic in NJ. Also many who live low income as well as any multi-dwelling rental should be especially careful as the temps get colder, preventing fires and having the legal temps in apartments is very important and the NJ DCA has codes, standards for this. Also please note that you can contact 211 for no heat, please do not use the old fashioned space heaters as they can be a fire hazard!

One thing that goes along with cold weather, apartment safety is what can you use to cook with in a rooming house (if your lease allows it, also It should since they are safe) Crockpot and rice cookers should be safe as they do NOT have open flame as their heating source.. watch these videos and get some ideas.

You may also need help with Energy assistance if you have to pay for Elc. and or gas in you Bergen County apartment!

One thing for sure is that it is the best time of the year, unless you are homeless, or facing eviction! there are many resources and funding sources that you most likely can qualify for, weather you are a tenant or a landlord.>>

While a second Stimulus check wont cover much at all, Bergen County’s ESG program threw HABC NJ never stopped during the pandemic and Greater Bergen also has funding for Eviction prevention. FYI UPDATE: Bergen County Board of Social Services continues to work remotely to provide services including TRA and EA for BC residents. CLICK HERE for their web site. Ahh the Fall foliage, crisp cool air, outside. Inside, many may not know about energy assistance. There are many resources and funding sources available for low income in NJ!

Who to complain to about no heat in NJ? You can contact, not only your local Buildings / BOH Dept, but you can contact NJ211.org> CLICK HERE! NJ DCA’s State Inspection Section – (609) 633-6241 is the NJ Department OF Community Affairs complaint line! The DCA can help with many housing problems

Did you know “From October 1 to May 1, the rental premises shall be maintained at a temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.; between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. the rental premises shall be maintained at a temperature of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the resources that Bergen County residents have asked about is help with Related; utilities, weatherization, USF/LIHEAP! There are 2 Locations that you can get your application for the Weatherization program.: GBCA’s location in Hackensack 316 State street; online, for the request!

What is Code Blue in NJ? #CodeBlue is a Code weather event where; T he temperature is 32 degrees

There is definitely a shortage of Social workers! One program that can help is P.A.T.H.; [Project for Assistance in Transition from Homeless (PATH) Program] In Bergen County P.A.T.H. does homeless outreach as well as homeless prevention outreach and assessment! Each county has P.A.T.H. AS well. In Bergen call: 201-646-0333. If you need an assessment, a Mental Health clinic for non emergencies, homeless can utilize the “Urgent care clinic” of CBH care 7 days a week. call: (201) 957-1800. please note, the wellness clinic is not a medical emergency facility!
