Before we get into some recipes, Did you know that You can grow vegetables & Herbs using purchases from your your EBT card also known as S.N.A.P.? Yes you can. If your local market does not allow you to buy “Seeds and plants, which produce food for the household to eat.” CLICK HERE and show them this U.S.D.A. info page! Some ideas for your apartment or windowsill garden, With not much room in your room or apartment you may want consider more herbs to make healthy meals the better choice. Chives, basil, parsley, oregano & thyme do not take up a lot of space and are packed with flavor. Cherry tomatoes & peas can be grown on a window as well. For larger vegetables like green beans & larger vegetables and vine vegetables should be planted outdoors. All of which you can buy with your S.N.A.P. card!

One of the basic herbs I always like using is basil! Pesto is really good, especially when you can grow the basil your self! Check out the video below!

Simple to make and basically the only 2 expensive ingredients are the cheese and the EVOO, but you can buy them on your S.N.A.P. card! Here is the directions: Simply crush garlic in bowl if you don’t have a mortar & pestle. break up basil put in food processor with olive oil & grated pecorino Romano cheese. you may want to chop the nuts in the food processor first. Just keep adding olive oil to desired texture. that simple.

If you ever get tired of simple pasta and a simple sauce, you can make your own pasta and make manicotti, It has some really wonderful ingredients in it and taking the time to make it can be very therapeutic! Also making home made calzone is also fun and, who doesn’t like calzone! Check out the video for home made calzone! If you “utilize your local food pantry” you will have a nice stock of tomato sauce in your pantry! CFA & Emmanuel Church sometimes gives out sausage as well as other foods!

Do you know about Bergen Community Transportation? Find out if you qualify for the “Meals on wheels” Program!

One of my favorite cooking tools is the Cast Iron skillet! Chicken that you can get for free at your local food pantry, is one of the most common foods that they give out and a cast iron skillet is another way to make this common dish tasty! Curry chicken is another; NOTE; In the video I did not make it in the cast iron skillet! You can make it in a regular pan that you can put in the oven (not all pans can go into the oven) Check the instruction on your pots and pans before using, as well as washing them before using!
